D’var Torah for the month of Marcheshvan 5770
During the month of Marcheshvan we read in the Torah the history of the first twenty generations of humanity and the appearance of Abraham, the father of our nation.
The life of אברהם אבינו , Avraham Avinu, foreshadows the fate of our people; He is uprooted from his place of birth, wandering from place to place, persecuted but also respected. Ready to sacrifice his life and the life of his dearest for his trust in God and ready to forefront dangerous enemies to save and redeem his captive relative. Through him we become the legal owners of ארץ ישראל .
As Ramban (Rabbi Moshe Ben Nachman) explains in his commentary on
Hashem had promised the Land to Abraham many times (in פרק י"ב ו) when he entered the Land:
וירא ה' אל אברם ויאמר לזרעך אתן את הארץ הזאת:
“Hashem appeared to Abram and said: To your offspring I will give this land”
Then later (פרק י"ג ט"ו - י"ז) HaShem promises him all the land he can see: to him and his offspring forever:
"כי את כל הארץ אשר אתה רואה לך אתננה ולזרעך עד עולם"
"קום התהלך בארץ לארכה ולרחבה כי לך אתננה"
“Arise, walk about the land through its length and breadth. For to you will I give it.”
And yet again HaShem describes the boundaries of the Land but this time it is not just a promise; it is a covenant.
"ביום ההוא כרת ה' את אברם ברית לאמר: לזרעך נתתי את הארץ הזאת מנהר מצרים עד הנהר הגדול נהר פרת.."
“On that day HaShem made a covenant with Abram, saying ‘To your descendants have I given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates River.”
The covenant will not be abrogated, even if we go into exile, because of our sins, we shall come back to inherit it:
In a later chapter (ח' פרק י"ז) HaShem makes another covenant with Abraham ברית מילה and He repeats his promise in very strong terms.
"ונתתי לך ולזרעך אחריך את ארץ מגוריך את כל ארץ כנען לאחוזת עולם והייתי להם לא-להים"
…And I will give to you and to your offspring after you the land of your dwelling – the whole of the Land of Canaan as an everlasting possession and I shall be a God to them…”
When we read these chapters we have to internalize this idea. Sadly, not only our enemies, but even many of our own people question our right to our country and regard us as כובשים, occupiers!
It was very important that our Prime Minister emphasized the fact that we are and have been the rightful owners of ארץ ישראל, when he spoke at the UN General Assembly. We, in the religious Zionist movement, do not need convincing, we stand firm in our belief in
"ארץ ישראל לעם ישראל על פי תורת ישראל"
“The Land of Israel for the People of Israel according to the Torah of Israel”
It was an uplifting experience to participate in a Sefer Torah dedication in the new settlement on the sands of Halutza, near the Egyptian border. The uprooted pioneers of Netzarim in Gush Katif have chosen to continue their pioneering efforts to make the desert bloom, and they are establishing themselves in this remote, isolated desert. We met happy people lovely, lively children dancing with joy following Sefer HaTorah, dedicated by World Mizrachi in honor of Mr. Kurt Rothschild who is known for his tireless dedication to Torah, Gemilut Hassadim and ארץ ישראל.
May he and all of us merit the fulfillment of the verse, embroidered on the Torah mantle donated to Bnei Netzarim!
"כי נחם ה' ציון נחם כל חרבותיה, וישם מדברה כעדן וערבתה כגן ה' ששון ושמחה ימצא בה תודה וקול זמרה" (ישעיהו נ"א ג')
“…He will make her wilderness like Eden and her wasteland like a garden of HaShem; joy and gladness will be found there; thanksgiving and song”
